2011 Iota Delta Rho Awards for Exemplary Interdisciplinary Research of the Year

  • One award open for all Virginia Tech students
  • One award for a member of the IDR Honor Society
  • Each award winner will receive a certificate and $250

Nominations for this award acknowledge the most exemplary interdisciplinary research (IDR) taking place at Virginia Tech in the 2010/2011 school year.  The intention of this award is first to provide recognition IDR that is methodologically explicit in its detailing of the disciplines utilized and the unique integration process involved in the project.  Secondly, this award is designed to promote Virginia Tech students to not only produce high-quality research, but to challenge the university community to be at the vanguard of creating new horizons of what is interdisciplinarily possible.  As such, research that strives to be broadly interdisciplinary, meaning that it attempts to integrate disciplines that are dissimilar from one and other (example: a history, theater and biology project would be a broader form of IDR than a biology, chemistry, and physics project), will be given special consideration due to the added difficulty of integrating supposedly, but not inherently, different disciplinary perspectives.

Applicants are required to submit a two-page application document

  • The first page is a cover page (including essay title, applicant name, program/college/degree, and a short biography) endorsed with the signature of the applicant’s faculty advisor
  • The second page is a 500-word writeup of the applicant’s interdisciplinary research

2011 Iota Delta Rho Award for Exemplary Interdisciplinary Research Essay of the Year

  • One award open for all Virginia Tech students
  • One award for a member of the IDR Honor Society
  • Each award winner will receive a certificate and $250

Nominations for this award acknowledge an academic essay that details the process of interdisciplinary research (IDR) that we seek to promote at Virginia Tech.  The intention of this award is to help emerging interdisciplinarians navigate the challenges and obstacles that are inherent in attempting to integrate the practices and methods of a diverse range of disciplines.  In addition, this award seeks to inspire the university community to pursue IDR as both a method of expanding the cross-discipinary dialogue on campus and in acknowledgement of the patently interdisciplinary problems of the twenty-first century.

Applicants are required to submit a two-page application document

  • The first page is a cover page (including essay title, applicant name, program/college/degree, and a short biography)
